While Dietl's probe shot down suspicions that JonBenet’s parents had something to do with her death, Patsy — Miss West Virginia in the 1977 Miss America pageant — did not tell the whole story before she succumbed to ovarian cancer at age 49 on June 24, 2006.

“Her parents always maintained they brought JonBenet home late from Christmas dinner with friends and put her straight to bed — no snack, no hot chocolate, nothing,” noted Dietl. “If that’s so, why did the autopsy turn up undigested pineapple chunks in JonBenet’s stomach?

"No pineapple had been served at dinner — and cops found a bowl with the remnants of a pineapple treat on the family’s dining room table," the former New York City homicide cop observed. “On it were Patsy’s fingerprints. Why would she not own up to a late-night fruit snack with JonBenet?”

But Dietl also dismissed suspicions that swirled around Patsy. Some investigators suggested she had something to do with the death because:

■ Patsy was jealous JonBenet would grow up to win Miss America, which she had failed to do.
■ JonBenet was a bed-wetter and Patsy flew into a rage at her for having an accident that night.
■ Depressed over her cancer battle, Patsy snapped.

“Yes mothers do kill, but by all accounts, Patsy was a wonderful, doting, loving mother," said Dietl. "She coped with some of life’s most trying problems and came through with flying colors.”

As for John Ramsey, shown here at Patsy's burial, Boulder cops learned “he was a doting father, a hard worker, a decent guy, a pretty patient guy,” said Dietl. “He was still liked by his first wife — and that’s really saying something.”
