Hunter's marriage was first rocked by reports in 2015 that he kept a secret account on the extramarital dating website AshleyMadison. Hunter initially denied the account was his, and blamed Russian spies that he claimed were trying to ruin his reputation.

But an investigation later revealed the dating account was set up from Georgetown University — during the same period when Hunter was teaching there. Meanwhile, his reputation took another hit in Sept. 2015, with The National ENQUIRER reporting that the Vice-President's son had tested positive for cocaine and was discharged from the Navy Reserve.

"Joe's deeply distraught about Hunter," an insider told The ENQUIRER — adding: "The family has known about this since June 2013!" Hunter admitted that he regretted his actions, saying: "With the love of my family, I'm moving forward." But now Joe seems proud of Hunter moving on with his late son's family, telling the New York Post: "“We are all lucky that Hunter and Hallie found each other as they were putting their lives together again after such sadness."
