Tom Selleck Fans Blast ‘Magnum’ Reboot Starring Jay Hernandez

Jay Hernandez is ready to say “Aloha” to his new role on “Magnum, P.I.” — but not everyone is happy about his latest gig!

The “Scandal” alum has been tapped to play Thomas Magnum, a part made famous by ’80s hunk Tom Selleck — and his iconic mustache. The hit drama, which ran from ’80 to ’88, saw Tom’s Vietnam vet character donning colorful Hawaiian shirts while solving crimes and living the high life in Oahu.

In the new series, Jay will play Magnum as a decorated ex-Navy SEAL coming home from Afghanistan and re-purposing his military skills to become a private investigator. But some loyal fans of the original aren’t convinced CBS made the right move!

“I don’t feel anyone else could play Magnum except for Tom Selleck,” said one peeved fan on Twitter. “If ‘Magnum’ doesn’t star Tom Selleck, they can boot it right out the door,” griped another. Selleck is shown here in 2009 with co-stars Larry Manetti and Roger E. Mosley.

The reboot is the latest blast from the past for CBS. The network has also ordered a remake of “Murphy Brown” after successfully rehashing “Hawaii Five-0” and “MacGyver.” Like Tom’s show, the pilot will be set in Hawaii — but there’s no word on whether Jay will sport a ’stache!
