In this letter written to the Senate Judiciary Committee on Friday, FBI director James Comey detailed why the bureau was reopening the probe that was seemingly closed for good: “In previous congressional testimony, I referred to the fact that the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) had completed its investigation of former Secretary Clinton’s personal server,” Comey wrote. “Due to recent developments, I am writing to supplement my previous testimony.”

Comey originally decided not to move ahead in prosecuting Hillary for alleged misuse of classified information through her email server — and he was met with a great deal of anger from both members of Congress and the American public. He later defended his decision while testifying, insisting that he had seen no malicious intent on the part of the Democratic candidate.

But now Comey said the FBI has obtained new information. “In connection with an unrelated case, the FBI has learned of the existence of emails that appear to be pertinent to the investigation,” Comey wrote. “I am writing to inform you that the investigative team briefed me on this yesterday, and I agreed that the FBI should take appropriate investigative steps designed to allow investigators to review these emails to determine whether they contain classified information, as well as to asses their importance to our investigation.”

It remains to be seen whether the material under review will be “significant,” according to the letter. “Although the FBI cannot yet assess whether this material may be significant," said Comey, "and I cannot predict how long it will take us to complete this additional work, I believe it is important to update your Committees about our efforts in light of my previous testimony.”
