The "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy" star went after Elton on an episode of “Watch What Happens Live” — originally appearing to be joking (“What, again, dear?”) before blasting the final shows as a cash-in. “It stinks of selling tickets,” said Rod, adding: “It’s dishonest. It’s not rock and roll.” The harsh comments, however, are part of a rock and roll feud dating back to 1977!

For most of the '70s, Elton and Rod were close friends. They had even spent years pitching a Hollywood film starring them as feuding rock stars. Things reportedly first soured after Elton scored a big-screen turn and a hit single by himself in the 1975 film "Tommy." Shortly afterwards, the two made headlines with a public brawl in 1977 — over a woman!

The National ENQUIRER was on the scene when Rod walked into the Le Bistro restaurant in Beverly Hills — and got into a fight with Elton over a woman! Then at the height of his fame, Elton wasn't even out as bisexual, and was furious to see Rod out with an ex!

Witnesses reported that Elton confronted the couple and shoved Rod into a booth — before his former friend swung back with a swift right hook to Elton's left eye. But the two were palling around again by 1979, with Elton having come out about his gay past and Rod marrying Alana Hamilton. Their rivalry, however, has always kept their camps nervous. "They're friends," said one music insider, "until Rod goes too far!"

That includes a 2015 snipe at Elton's hair transplant, after Rod said of his own hairline: "I’ve been fortunate I’ve still got it, unlike a couple of my mates in the music business. I am not going to mention any names." When asked to comment on Elton's hairstyle, Rod then laughed: "It’s sewn on!" And when the two had dueling Las Vegas residencies, Rod dismissed Elton's shows as "more stationary."

And, once again, Rod didn't worry about going too far while blasting Elton's final tour. “I’ve never spoken about retirement,” said Rod, “and if I do retire, I won’t make an announcement. I’ll just fade away.”
