But his nightmare wasn’t over. The TV doc kept putting off a three-month follow-up colonoscopy, and when he finally had the second procedure, nine months later, his surgeon found another polyp.

“I was a bad patient,” Dr. Oz admitted. “I could easily have caught my problem too late and been facing major surgery, chemotherapy — even death.” About 150,000 new cases of colon cancer are diagnosed in the U.S. each year, with almost 50,000 patients dying.

Dr. Oz realized he needed to be there for his wife,

“He knows patients who smoke, eat diets high in red and processed meats, drink too much alcohol, don’t exercise and are obese are at increased risk of colon cancer," said the source.

"He has none of those risks, but he started exercising more and made his eating habits even healthier. "He knows extra fiber, and foods like walnuts, bok choy, ginger, broccoli sprouts and other leafy greens can fight cancer.
