“Security isn’t so much for him but for her,” South Oxfordshire district councilor
Paul Harrison, who helped get the Clooneys’ security upgrades approved, told "
Grazia" magazine. “From George’s point of view, there’s more concern with his wife, the high-level legal work she does and the death threats she gets. It’s quite serious.”

The frightening death threats are believed to be connected to a controversial case in which Amal is representing the former president of the Maldives, Mohammed Nasheed, who is currently serving a 13-year sentence for terrorism after being overthrown in 2012. This has put her in opposition to the current Maldivian government, which does not want Nasheed freed.

Apparently people connected to the Maldivian government are so unhappy about Amal’s work that they have threatened to kill her! And these people are not to be taken lightly. In September, Amal’s co-council on the Maldives case, Mahfooz Saeed, was stabbed in the head! (Luckily, he survived.)

In response to the threats,
George and Amal reportedly have installed surveillance cameras inside and around their nine-bedroom mansion, and reportedly are chauffeured to a local restaurant just 300 yards away rather than expose themselves by walking! At the eatery, security guards are posted inside and out.

“George is understandably concerned that there are people seeking to harm Amal or at least intimidate her,” confided a friend of the couple. “She is a formidable woman with a wealth of experience handling contentious cases, but threats must be taken seriously. George’s biggest fear is anything happening to Amal.”

Amal, however, is not easily cowed. Despite the unrest in the Maldives and her associate being stabbed, Amal still went to the country to visit Nasheed, the nation’s first elected president, who said he was forced to resign “at gunpoint” in 2012. “It meant a lot to me to meet Nasheed, who I had read about and I considered a hero.”
