The small town of Perris was sickened when the Turpins' 17-year-old daughter was able to escape from the small suburban home where her siblings were chained to beds and starved into submission. Shocked police even originally believed the teenager was just 10 years old when she finally came to them begging for help!
But a neighbor
told RADAR Online that the Turpins managed to hide their terrified children — ranging in age from 29 to 2 years old — away from prying eyes. “To be honest," Roberto Gomez told
RADAR, "I didn’t know these people, I didn’t see anything. The rest of the neighbors never saw anything. I work in my backyard — I never heard any noises, I didn’t see any kids. Nothing.”

Roberto, whose home was directly behind the Turpins' house of horrors, still revealed one secret to the Turpins avoiding prying eyes: “During the night, they always had their light on — which I thought was a bit strange. Once it starts getting dark, the lights are on throughout the night. I get up sometimes around three or four o’clock in the morning. I would see the lights on.”

“A few times,” Roberto continued, “I’d see the TV on. But I didn’t see any people around — almost like the home was empty. It was so quiet.” Robert added that other neighbors had seen the couple out shopping late at night: “During the day, we never see them driving, or see them out of the house. I didn’t even know they had one kid!”
