George Lazenby had just one major success as an actor, but his single turn playing James Bond in 1969’s “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service” gave him a shot at romancing Barbra Streisand — putting him in Babs’ big leagues alongside Prince Charles! In the end, however, Lazenby laughingly recalled how he didn’t have any better luck with Barbra than he did as Bond. “I met Barbra in London when I was still the new James Bond,” Lazenby recalled. “She invited me to pick her up on the set of the movie she was making, and we would go to dinner….I zoomed onto the set on my motorcycle….”

"Wearing blue jeans and a T-shirt," George recalled, "she jumped onto the back of the bike and off we rode. As we stopped at a light, we pulled up alongside another couple on a motorcycle. The girl turned to Barbra and said, 'You know, lady, if you want a job, they're making a Barbra Streisand movie right around here. You could double for her!'"

"That night," George continued, "Barbra invited me back to her hotel room. We sat on her couch, and I took her in my arms. But something stopped me from going much further. I didn't want her to think little of me — I wanted to be a big man in her eyes. But she was very disappointed." But, amazingly enough, George still got a second chance with the screen legend!

The two reunited in Las Vegas, where George visited her at a home she was renting: "We started to kiss, but she called a halt. She wasn't interested, she said, in a casual affair. She wanted me to be her one and only. I took a long look at Barbra. She was beautiful, successful. She had America at her feet. All I had to do was say the word, and she would be mine!"

"But then," said George, "I heard this voice inside me. It was telling me not to give myself body and soul to one woman. With a heavy heart, I went on my way. I hadn't heard the last of Barbra, though." In fact, George was about to have one last offscreen encounter worthy of his biggest role!

"A few months later," claimed George, "I saw
Elliott Gould at a party. I introduced myself — not remembering he'd been married to Barbra [through 1971]. Gould went red in the face and started to shake. Without warning, he grabbed a knife from a place setting and brandished it in my face!" Fortunately, added George: "The guy he was with took him by the shoulders and pushed him back into his seat."

But, added George, he'd have better luck with
Jill St. John, the Bond Girl from "Diamonds are Forever" who'd later marry
Robert Wagner after the death of
Natalie Wood. "Jill had been dating
Henry Kissinger," the ex-Bond recalled, "but I moved into her palatial mansion — and for the next few weeks, we were inseparable!"
