There were bipartisan calls of prayers and support when the Bush family announced on April 15 that she had chosen to focus on "comfort care" after a "recent series of hospitalizations." And behind the scenes, insiders were grateful that the last great Bush family feud had been resolved.

The rift between Barbara and her daughter-in-law Columba had been exposed by
The National ENQUIRER in 2002 — with an insider revealing that her son Jeb had hustled his wife out of their mansion when Barbara visited the then-governor in Florida. "She was away the whole time that Barbara was there," said an insider, blaming their problems on “your basic mother-in-law/daughter-in-law tension.”

“Barbara,” added the source, “says Columba is absolutely useless to Jeb's career.” Then things only got more tense in 2004, when Peter and Rochelle Schweizer published their 2004 book, "The Bushes: Portrait of a Dynasty." One chapter unearthed a diary entry from Barbara written shortly before Jeb's wedding, as she wrote: “How I worry about Jeb and Columba. Does she love him?”

Insiders added that Barbara was also furious over Columba's expensive taste. Barbara herself had boasted as First Lady that she only wore fake pearls. Columba, however, caused a scandal as Florida's First Lady when she was caught by custom agents after failing to declare $19,000 in jewelry and clothes that she'd bought in Paris. The insider confided: “Barbara told me, 'That woman is a disaster!'”

But, reported sources, Barbara warmed toward Columba when Jeb's wife became a grandmother herself in 2011 — with Barbara becoming a great-grandmother for the first time. Then the two finally bonded during Jeb's doomed run against for the presidency in 2016. “Columba hated the spotlight," said a source. "That's when Barbara decided that it was time to bury the hatchet and be at her daughter-in-law's side for Jeb's biggest moment.”
