A driver and passengers safely escaped after a bus caught fire in Washington on Friday, and an investigation into the cause is underway, officials said.

Snohomish County Fire District 4 said a Community Transit bus caught fire on the 3700 block of Bickford Avenue in Snohomish shortly before 7 a.m. Friday with three passengers and the driver on board. Everyone evacuated safely, fire officials said, but the road was temporarily closed.

Photos shared by the fire department show the bus engulfed in flames and a large plume of smoke rising as firefighters work to extinguish the blaze. Fire officials said it took 600 gallons of water to put out the fire.

The fire department said the origin of the fire was “well away” from the bus’s diesel engine.

“When crews arrived there was heavy fire in the area of the reader board, at the front if the bus, above the windshield at the roof,” the fire department said. The county’s fire marshal was called to fully investigate the cause of the fire.
