A missing toddler was safely located by a Maine Game Warden and K9 Koda on Tuesday after the girl wandered away from her family’s backyard.

The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife said 14 Game Wardens and two Warden Service K9s responded along with several local law enforcement agencies and fire departments to join the search after the girl’s family called 911 at around 11 a.m.

The 2-year-old girl was with her mother outside their home on Tripp Lane in Jay on Tuesday morning when her mother looked up from her chores to see the girl was gone. The family immediately searched the area but called 911 after they could not locate her.

First responders arrived and searched nearby buildings and a nearby wooded area. At around 1:15 p.m., Game Warden Jake Voter and K9 Koda in “thick brush” some 300 yards northwest of the family’s backyard.

“The child was healthy and alert, and had only minor scrapes received from walking through the woods,” officials said. After a quick examination by emergency medical personnel, the girl was reunited with her family.

“Warden Voter and K9 Koda did an excellent job locating this young toddler in the thick woods where she was hidden by the brush,” said Maine Game Warden Sergeant Scott Thrasher. “Given the childs age, it was important to get multiple searchers here quickly and get them searching. It was great teamwork by multiple agencies that made for a very happy ending for the toddler and her family.”
