As the season of weddings, showers, and celebratory gatherings kicks into full gear, the questions of how much to spend and what to give are on many people’s minds.

Etiquette expert Neysla Paltsev, author of the upcoming book “Polished in Pink: Etiquette for Lifes Messy Moments” due out May 17, is offering helpful advice to navigate gift-giving with confidence and grace.

Paltsev, a certified etiquette coach specializing in hospitality and tea etiquette, emphasizes that the most important factors to consider when giving a gift are your relationship with the recipient, your personal budget, and the customs within your social circle.

“If youre a close friend or family member, its common to spend $50–$100, especially if youre attending an in-person shower or event,” says Paltsev. “For coworkers or acquaintances, $25–$40 is thoughtful and appropriate. But its important to emphasize: your budget always comes first. A meaningful gift doesnt need a high price tag.”

When it comes to registries, Paltsev encourages guests to take advantage of them. “Registries are there to guide guests toward items the celebrants actually need or want, which ensures your gift will be useful and appreciated,” she says. She also suggests adding a personal touch, such as including a heartfelt book inscription or customizing a bag or blanket with a special message.

For those working with a tighter budget, Paltsev recommends focusing on presentation.

“Wrap it beautifully, include a heartfelt card, or bundle smaller practical items in a cute basket or tote,” she says. “It can look elevated without inflating your spend.” Handmade gifts, such as knitted blankets, custom artwork, or memory books, are also highly encouraged.

“The time, thought, and care you invest can carry more weight than the monetary value — so dont feel pressured to spend more just to ‘match’ a registry price,” Paltsev says. Ultimately, the heart of good gift-giving lies in thoughtfulness.

“No matter what, the best gift is one thats given with sincerity, within your means, and that brings joy to the recipient,” Paltsev says.
