A man had to be rescued Monday night after climbing some 75 feet up a rock formation in Colorado’s Garden of the Gods Park without any climbing gear, officials said.

The Colorado Springs Fire Department responded Monday evening to a high-angle rescue call at the Garden of the Gods Park, known for striking sandstone rock formations that can reach some 300 feet high. They arrived to find a man had climbed up approximately 75 feet on the rocks without any climbing equipment or protective gear, and had become stuck.

The fire department said Engine 5, Engine 13, and Heavy Rescue worked for over an hour to set up a rope system for a so-called “B/C [Better Control] pickoff” rescue, which is typically used for challenging vertical rescues in which the patient is not injured and does not need to be stabilized in a litter.

A photo shared by the fire department shows a single rescuer harnessed to the rope system used to reach the stranded man.

The unprepared climber was not injured, and was brought safely back to the ground, the fire department said.
