The University of Maryland’s Class of 2025 was sent off into the world on Thursday with some words of wisdom from Kermit the Frog, as the de facto leader of the Muppets delivered a memorable commencement address.

“Yeah, now as I look out at you, students, I can tell that you have all worked your tails off. And, as a former tadpole, believe me, losing your tail is a pretty big deal, so, go Terps,” Kermit joked.

It is no coincidence that Kermit donned the University of Maryland’s red, black, and gold regalia — late Muppets creator Jim Henson was an alumnus. The beloved frog went to talk about “finding your people, taking the leap, and making connections,” important lessons he learned from Henson himself.

“My whole life I tried to appreciate people for exactly who they are. Uh, even if they are a pig who hogs the spotlight,” Kermit joked. “Arts and Humanities majors? Thats right. I see you. Thats right. Yeah, I also see you, biology majors. Yeah, but, uh, youre not going to get me to step foot inside your lab. No way. Forget it. But, congratulations anyway.”

Kermit said that once you’ve found your people, it’s time to take a leap.

“And leaping, uh, is kind of something we frogs know a thing or two about. And, uh, judging by the number of you whove leapt into McKeldin Fountain at 2 oclock in the morning, so do you. So, do you,” Kermit said.

While Kermit acknowledged that the new grads are now focused on making new connections and networking and applying for jobs, he encouraged them to remember their closest connections: the families and loved ones who supported them on their journey to graduation.

“A lot of them, theyre probably here right now. And some of them they might not be, but, trust me, youre still connected to them. You really are. And thats the thing about love: It sticks with you even when youre apart,” Kermit said.

“Its important to stay connected to your loved ones, stay connected to your friends, and most of all stay connected to your dreams. No matter how big. No matter how impossible they seem,” Kermit said. “The truth is dreams are how we figure out where we want to go. And life is how we get there.”
