EXECS TO DREW CAREY: AIRPORT SECURITY HUMOR NOT FUNNY

description

Drew Carey is reportedly miffed at censors at ABC, who demanded that an episode that pokes fun at airport security be reworked.

In the episode, Carey’s bumbling friends Lewis and Oswald get jobs as airport security guards. The network is concerned that, due to the less-than-intelligent nature of the show’s characters, it would be perpetuating the notion that all airport security guards are incompetent. They requested that at least one character working in a security capacity be portrayed as competent and able to do the job.

In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Carey describes the network’s request as a threat and says that the intimation was that if the changes were not made, the script would be trashed. “I’ve never had a threat like that from the network… Everybody was kind of in shock,” says Carey. “If you can’t satirize authority institutions, what’s the point?”
