A Florida man was gored by a bison in Yellowstone National Park over the weekend, but sustained only minor injuries, officials said.

The National Park Service said a 47-year-old man from Cape Coral, Fla., approached a bison too closely in the Lake Village area of Yellowstone and was gored at around 3:15 p.m. on May 4.

The man was treated by emergency medical personnel for minor injuries, park officials said. The incident is under investigation.

The National Park Service said it was the first reported incident of a person being injured by a bison this year. There were two reported bison incidents in 2024 and one in 2023.

Bison will defend their space when threatened and have injured more people in Yellowstone than any other animal,” park officials said. “They are unpredictable and can run three times faster than humans.

Park officials are reminding visitors to stay at least 25 yards away from large animals including bison, elk, bighorn sheep, deer, moose and coyotes, and at least 100 yards away from bears and wolves.
