A Florida man was taken to jail Wednesday after he was captured on video choking and punching his dog, authorities said.

The Brevard County Sheriff’s Office said a caller reported a case of animal cruelty on May 18, and an animal enforcement officer responded to the scene and discovered there was a video of the incident.

A graphic video shared by the sheriff’s office shows Justin Hehner choking his dog Shiloh by the collar, lifting Shiloh off the ground by the collar and punching the dog repeatedly.

Sheriff Wayne Ivey said Hehner “likes to act tough,” including by calling deputies names, but the “height of his toughness is what he’s going to jail for because we got him on video.”

Hehner was booked into the Brevard County Jail on a charge of aggravated felony animal cruelty. Ivey said Judge Laura Moody denied bond for Hehner, who was already out on bond for a separate aggravated assault with a deadly weapon charge.

“I always tell people, if you can hurt an animal, and if you possess that much evil to hurt an animal, you can certainly do the same thing to a human and even worse,” Ivey said. “I know in my heart how evil this person is.”

The sheriff’s office said Shiloh is “thankfully” recovering from the incident.
