Authorities in Florida say a “verbal altercation” led to a suspect driving a vehicle into a crowd of people, striking three, before he was shot in the shoulder by a bystander.

The Lee County Sheriff’s Office said 55-year-old Eduardo Lando-Matamoro of Hialeah was arrested and charged with three counts of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon in connection with the incident Sunday night.

According to the sheriff’s office, deputies responding to a report of a disturbance on the 2000 block of Maravilla Circle in Fort Myers Sunday night learned that a verbal altercation led Lando-Matamoro to drive his vehicle into a crowd of people gathered in the driveway.

Three people were hit by the car, and two witnesses shot at Lando-Matamoro, striking him in the shoulder, the sheriff’s office said. Lando-Matamoro attempted to flee the area, but was held down by a witness until deputies arrived.

Lando-Matamoro and two victims were transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

“I am incredibly proud of the brave witness who stepped up and helped stop the suspect. Their quick actions made a real difference,” said Sheriff Carmine Marceno. “Thanks to the swift and dedicated work of my team, we were able to make a quick arrest and bring a sense of peace back to the community.”
