A group of Florida boaters were rescued over the weekend after they ran aground on an oyster bed filled with razor-sharp shells, officials said.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded to a restricted area near Apollo Beach shortly after midnight Saturday after a group of boaters became stranded on top of an oyster bed.

“What may seem like a simple inconvenience is actually extremely dangerous,” the sheriff’s office said. “Oyster shells are sharp as knives and can cause severe injuries if walked on or fallen into.”

A video shared by the sheriff’s office shows pitch darkness surrounding the stranded boat, and a sea of oyster shells crunching underfoot.

Marine Unit deputies carefully guided each individual off the boat, and transported them all to the nearest dock.

“Review water conditions, know the area youre boating in, and make sure you are fully prepared,” the sheriff’s office reminded boaters. “We are here to help, but safety starts with you!”
