A dirt biker was airlifted to safety after sustaining a leg injury in an “extremely remote” area of California’s San Bernardino National Forest on Monday, officials said.

The San Bernardino County Fire Protection District responded along with forest rangers and sheriff’s deputies to a reported dirt bike accident near Silverwood Lake, deep in San Bernardino National Forest, shortly after 11 a.m. Monday. The rider had a “moderate” lower leg injury, but due to the remote location, rescuers determined a helicopter would be necessary to extract him.

San Bernardino County Sheriff Department Air Rescue responded with a helicopter, with two fire department paramedics on board.

A video shared by the fire department shows the helicopter landing near an awaiting ambulance. Paramedics meet the helicopter and place the patient on a stretcher for ambulance transport.

Fire officials are reminding off-road riders to “ride with a buddy, wear full protective gear, carry a charged phone, and know your location.”
