Police in Colorado are searching for a suspect involved in an attempted kidnapping Monday near a middle school in a suburb of Denver.

The Thornton Police Department said a 15-year-old girl was walking near Thornton Middle School at around 11:20 a.m. when a man tried to grab her. She “resisted,” and the suspect fled the area. School resource officers were notified about the incident shortly before 4 p.m.

Officers obtained surveillance video that showed the attempted abduction, and police released a blurry image of the suspect Monday night.

The suspect is described as a white male, approximately 5 feet 8 inches to 5 feet 9 inches tall, with a slim to medium build and blonde hair. He was wearing a dark-colored long-sleeve shirt, blue jeans, white shoes, glasses, and carrying a black backpack.

Police said the suspect may be associated with a red sedan with a white bumper.

While the investigation is ongoing, the police department said officers would be working with Adams 12 Five Star Schools to ensure student and staff safety.

“Students and families are encouraged to stay alert and take simple precautions, such as walking in groups, reporting suspicious behavior, and reviewing safe walking routes,” police said. “Students should avoid approaching unknown individuals or vehicles, trust their instincts, and seek help immediately if they feel unsafe.”

Police are asking anyone with information about the suspect to come forward or submit an anonymous tip.
