An investigation is underway after a South Carolina man was killed while inside a petting zoo enclosure with kangaroos and wallabies on Friday night, authorities said.

The Horry County Police Department said it was investigating an “animal-related” death that occurred late Friday evening at 5 Star Farm, a petting zoo about 30 miles from Myrtle Beach. The petting zoo and animals are owned by a relative of the victim, identified as 52-year-old Eric Slate.

“Robert Slate, owner of 5 Star Farm, wishes to address a tragic incident involving a family member that occurred at the farm,” 5 Star Farm said in a statement posted on Facebook. “The animal was not nor has been out of his secure enclosure. At this time we do ask, for respect and support for the family.”

Horry County Councilmember Mark Causey told News13 that the animal believed to be involved in Slate’s death was not euthanized.

“There are a number of other animals at the incident location,” police said. “All animals are accounted for and contained, and there is no risk to the community.”

An autopsy is being conducted by the Horry County Coroners Office.
