An American anesthesiologist from Atlanta was raped and murdered on the first day of her tropical vacation on the island of Grenada by a madman swinging a sword!
Jessica Colker, 39, was apparently walking along a secluded beach with her physician husband, Brian Melito, 62, Sunday when they were set upon by a maniac wielding a cutlass — a sword with a heavy, curved blade seen in pirate movies.
Brian fled the scene and attempted to get help from a nearby hotel, but when he returned with men it was too late — his wife has been killed and her body stashed in a thicket of mangroves about 12 miles outside the capital city of St. George’s.
The U.S. Embassy for the region, based in Bridgetown, Barbados, confirmed Jessica’s death in a statement today, and said embassy personnel are “working closely with officials investigating Ms. Colker’s death.”
Police sources said a local man, Dave Martin Benjamin, a convict who was recently released from prison, is being questioned in connection with the case, but no arrests have been made.
Jessica, a registered pediatric anesthetist at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, had just arrived with Brian on Saturday evening at the luxury resort La Sagesse.
The couple were experienced travelers and, in fact, had met in Costa Rica. They were married in November 2014.
