The U.S. Coast Guard is warning beachgoers in the Chicago area to be on the lookout for three missing phosphorus pyrotechnic devices after one washed up on Montrose Beach on Monday.

Coast Guard Sector Lake Michigan said the powerful flares went missing during a joint military exercise with the Coast Guard and Air Force off the coast of Milwaukee, Wis., earlier this month. They were deployed but “did not activate when entering the water,” meaning they are still armed.

The phosphorous pyrotechnics produce a red smoke and flame that can reach temperatures of 2900 degrees Fahrenheit, according to the Coast Guard.

A lifeguard spotted one of the missing flares on Montrose Beach at around 5 p.m. Monday and called Chicago Police. The pyrotechnic did not activate.

The Coast Guard released an image of the device, which is a silver cylinder more than a foot long. The devices are able to float in water, so swimmers and boaters have also been warned to be on the lookout.

Anyone who encounters one of the missing pyrotechnics should not touch the device, and should call 911.
