“WHEN A MAN LOVES A WOMAN” ICON PERCY SLEDGE DEAD AT 74

Percy Sledge Dead

Chart topping PERCY SLEDGE known for his classic “When a Man Loves a Woman” has died in his Louisiana home at 74 from liver cancer.

While trying to get his career jump-started Percy worked as a hospital nurse.

His signature hit "When a Man Loves a Woman,” was his first song recorded under contract and became a “Super Hit Number One” around the world in 1966.

Percy scored multiple hits during the tumultuous decade including his follow-up single, "Warm and Tender Love."

While Percy’s chart success may have stalled during the 1970s he continued touring and got a late-career reboot when newer audiences discovered his first when it was included on the soundtrack of  the nostalgic baby-boomer flick “The Big Chill” (1983).

In April 1994, Percy pleaded guilty in federal court to tax evasion involving income from concerts in the late 1980s, AP reported  He was sentenced to six months in a halfway house with five years of probation, and  was ordered to pay $96,000 in back taxes and fines.

In 2005, Percy was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Adios, amigo.
