Big-screen superstar Tom Cruise may be taking his 1996 blockbuster “Jerry Maguire” to the small screen.

Friends of the 50-year-old “Mission: Impossible” hunk say he “borrowed” the idea from comedian Eddie Murphy, who’s planning to turn his popular ’80s film franchise “Beverly Hills Cop” into a TV series for CBS.

“Tom’s so intrigued by Eddie’s return to his signature role that he’s been exploring opportunities to revive some of his own big characters in a similar fashion,” a source told The ENQUIRER.

Tom originally wanted to revive his 1986 Maverick character from “Top Gun,” but shelved that idea after its director Tony Scott jumped to his death from a San Pedro, Calif., bridge in August, says the source.

So he shifted his focus to “Jerry Maguire,” and now the source says his biggest challenge will be convincing his co-stars from that flick – including Renee Zellweger, Cuba Gooding Jr. and Kelly Preston – to join the project.

Unfortunatelty, it’s looking unlikely that Renee would even consider a TV series,” said the source. “But most of the cast from that movie have remained close to Tom, and he loves the idea of getting his old pals back together on a regular paid gig.”

Tom is now developing scripts for a TV series pilot that picks up 20 years after where the film left off, with a new generation of sports agents working under Jerry Maguire.

“He’s really excited about this project,” added the source. “TV is something he’s always turned his nose up to, but after watching what Eddie’s doing, he can see the value in it.”
