A killer combo of booze and prescription pills landed LIZA MINNELLI back in rehab, The National ENQUIRER has exclusively learned.
The 69-year-old performer “spiraled out of control” after a painful new back injury, and sought help, a close source told The ENQUIRER.
“Liza was self-medicating. This time it was so bad that she had to enter a different facility, not where she regularly goes, to maintain her sobriety,” said the source.
Her longtime rep, Scott Gorenstein, announced March 18 that the “Cabaret” star was in treatment for substance abuse at an unnamed facility in Malibu, Calif.
While he claimed there was no drama behind Liza’s admission, another insider blamed the Oscar winner’s “alarming” appearance at a recent Hollywood event.
Named the “guest of honor” at the Los Angeles Italia Film Festival, Liza was working the event’s red carpet on Feb. 20, and “appeared off,” the insider told The ENQUIRER.
“She coherently answered some questions that night, but there were other moments when she seemed whacked out and had to be held up by her handlers.”
Liza underwent back surgery last September, and at the event, she admitted that she’d reinjured it.
“I was picking up my dogs, and they jumped,” she said.
“And I got twisted and fell. I thought, ‘It’s nothing.’ But it wasn’t nothing. After an X-ray, seems I busted it and have to have it fused.”
As The ENQUIRER has reported, Liza’s battled booze and drug addictions for years. She’s also endured hip and knee replacements.
The daughter of tragic star Judy Garland broke her wrist in three places while rehearsing in 2013, and also cancelled a string of summer concerts.
Added the source: “It’s been a tough year for Liza. Besides her physical ailments, she lost two of her closest friends – comedian Joan Rivers and Broadway star Elaine Stritch. Those deaths simply shattered her.”
