JOHN MELLENCAMP’s ready to take another bite out of the Big Apple to reconcile with MEG RYAN – if she’ll have him!

Sources say the aging rocker wants to get back together with Meg and he’s ready to rock NYC – Meg’s adopted hometown – to make it work. The two called it kaput over the summer, saying finis to a four-year romance.

Meg, 52, and John, 63, started dating in late 2010, after the singer-songwriter split from his wife of 18 years, Elaine Irwin Mellencamp.

Meg and John had been splitting their time between Meg’s Manhattan digs and his home in Indiana. Their long distance romance reportedly drove them apart, and John also swore he hated Mad-hattan!

In Dec. 2013, he said moving to New York was not happening: “I’m not leaving Indiana. I’m going to die here.”

An insider confirmed, “Both Meg and John are at the point where they are very set in their lives and they each have their own worlds.

“But they still love each other and John is willing to compromise now. He realizes how much he misses her and desperately wants Meg back in his life. John’s not willing to call it quits!”

Appearing on NBC’s “Today” show to promote his album “Plain Spoken,” John sounded ready to reconcile.

He gushed, “Meg’s an angel. She’s an angel sent to me, and I’m very happy. And, you know, nothing’s over ‘til
it’s over.”

But, as The National ENQUIRER previously reported, inside sources say Meg is NOT looking for a hubby. John – who’s been divorced three times – is said to be nuts for nups!

“John gets along great with Meg’s son, Jack, and he adores her young adopted daughter Daisy,” the insider revealed. “If Meg would agree, John would pop the question today.”
