Desperate to right a sinking ship, “Today” show producers hope to pair Diane Sawyer with Matt Lauer!

NBC brass think the former “Good Morning America” host would give the show’s slumping ratings a boost, insiders said.

And sources told The National ENQUIRER that Diane, 69, is rethinking her possible retirement!

“Diane would jump at the chance,” a network insider exclusively told The ENQUIRER.

“Today” has plummeted in the ratings since Savannah Guthrie stepped in as Matt’s co-host in 2012.

“Savannah could be a goner in a year,” an insider said. “Viewers haven’t warmed to her.”

“Today” is lagging behind ABC’s “GMA,” which Diane co-hosted until 2009. She stepped down as anchor of “ABC World News” in August, but was jarred by two personal losses.

Her mom passed away Oct. 22, then, on Nov. 19, her husband, director Mike Nichols, died of a heart attack at age 83.

“Diane…would never have anticipated losing her loved ones so shortly after,” a friend said. “She misses the excitement of working in daily TV.”

While Diane is no longer doing the Nightly News she remains under contract at ABC, doing specials, investigations and interviews.

A source said the network would likely release her.

“Producers believe this power duo would push ratings through the roof!”
