Police in Florida warned residents early Tuesday that a black bear was roaming around their neighborhood.

The St. Augustine Police Department shared a video early Tuesday of a black bear jumping over a wall next to what appears to be a residential multi-unit building in the Lincolnville area of downtown St. Augustine.

Police said officers were on the scene, but warned people in the area to “use caution” if they encounter the bear.

“It’s important to keep a respectful distance and never run. Black bears prefer to avoid people and will usually move on quickly,” police wrote alongside the video.

The news comes just a day after the Collier County Sheriffs Office and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) responded to a deadly bear attack near Everglades City. The bear is suspected of killing 89-year-old Robert Markel and his dog.

“The bear involved may still be in the area as our officers continue to secure the perimeter,” said FWC Officer George Reynaud told Fox 4 Now. “Out of an abundance of caution, we urge residents and visitors to remain vigilant and avoid the area.” According to the Naples Daily News, wildlife officials were seen hauling a dead bear from the woods at around 9 p.m. Monday. The bear was scheduled to undergo a necropsy to confirm whether it was involved in the attack.
