Seven people were killed in a fiery crash in Idaho Thursday evening, shutting a highway down for nearly seven hours overnight, police said.

Idaho State Police troopers responded to a report of a two-vehicle crash on eastbound U.S. Highway 20 at milepost 399 near Henrys Lake in Fremont County shortly before 7:15 p.m. The crash involved a 2021 black Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck and a Mercedes passenger van, which was operating as a tour vehicle.

The van, which was carrying 14 occupants, caught fire after the crash. The truck had only one occupant, the driver.

State police said emergency medical personnel responded and treated at least 16 patients. One air ambulance and additional “air and ground resources” responded to the scene “due to the severity of the injuries,” police said.

In total, seven people died as a result of the crash — six people who were in the van and the driver of the truck.

“Due to the magnitude of the incident and the ongoing process of notifying the next of kin, no names, ages, hometowns, or nationalities have been released,” state police said in a statement Friday morning. The Fremont County Coroners Office will provide identifications once they are available.

The road was closed for nearly seven hours overnight while crews cleared the scene. The cause of the crash remains under investigation, police said.
