Three climbers were killed after falling in the North Cascades in Washington state on Sunday, officials said.

The Okanogan County Sheriffs Office said Monday that it responded along with Okanogan County Search and Rescue volunteers to a reported climbing accident in the area of North Early Winters Spire off of State Route 20, about 16 miles west of Mazama, at around 11:30 a.m. on Sunday.

According to the sheriff’s office, a party of four climbers fell while descending a steep gully. The surviving climber called for help. The other three climbers were confirmed dead at the site of the accident, the sheriff’s office said.

The Snohomish County Helicopter Rescue Team assisted in recovering the bodies of the deceased climbers from the mountainous terrain. Their identities were not immediately released.

While the investigation is still ongoing, the sheriff’s office said it appears the accident was the result of an anchor failure while rappelling.

“Our thoughts are with the family members and friends of those involved,” the sheriff’s office said.
