A pair of boaters in Indiana were rescued over the weekend after their vessel became stuck in the shallow waters above a dam on the White River, officials said.

The Indianapolis Fire Department shared audio of a 911 call in which a bystander reported seeing the pontoon boat become stuck in the Broad Ripple canal where the White River curves toward a low-head dam near 64th Street and Westfield Boulevard.

“I just didn’t want to see them flip over and drown,” the caller says.

A video shared by the fire department shows rescuers in boats approaching the stuck boat. The two stranded boaters are standing in the shallow water outside their boat, wearing life vests.

WTHR reported that the stranded boaters told firefighters that their boat lost its motor when the water quickly shallowed. The current then pulled the boat closer to the dam, but just before it went over the dam, it became stuck in the shallow water.

The area where the boat became stuck has posted signs warning that “hazardous recirculating currents below the dams have trapped and drowned victims.”
