Two hikers who reported that their companion died in New York’s Adirondack Mountains were simply confused after ingesting hallucinogenic mushrooms, officials said.

On May 24, two hikers called 911 to report their companion had died on Cascade Mountain in the Adirondack High Peaks, and at around 9 a.m., Forest Ranger Praczkajlo set out to respond, the New York Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) said in a news release Wednesday.

The same two hikers also encountered the Cascade Summit Steward and reported that they were lost. The steward, however, “determined the hikers were in an altered mental state,” the DEC said. The third hiker, meanwhile, called and confirmed they were not injured.

According to DEC, the two hikers had ingested hallucinogenic mushrooms. Ranger Praczkajlo escorted them to a waiting ambulance and New York State Police unit. Praczkajlo escorted the third hiker back to their campsite.
