The beautiful jaguar was attending the ceremony as a symbol of the country. As seen in the video above, Juma was sedated and well-behaved during the traditional ceremony for the passing of the torch to mark the beginning of the Olympics.

After the ceremony, however, Juma reportedly became riled and attempted to escape — but back into the zoo nearby the training center.

Handlers shot Juma with tranquilizer darts. When that didn’t sufficiently calm the cat, a soldier fatally shot the jaguar.

“Juma was a docile animal used to living among people at the center,” said the Amazon Military Command in an official statement — but the military also said the soldier’s fatal shot was in keeping with safety procedures.

Representatives for the Olympics later said: “We made a mistake in permitting the Olympic torch, a symbol of peace and unity, to be exhibited alongside a chained wild animal.”

In addition to showing Juma’s final moments, the heartbreaking footage above also shows Juma’s corpse — and his handlers mourning the tragedy in the aftermath of the shooting.
