Zimmerman, 28, the neighborhood watch volunteer who shot Martin,17, was arrested and charged with second-degree murder after months of controversy.

Florida special prosecutor Angela Corey announced the formal charges at the state attorney's office in Jacksonville, Florida on Wednesday afternoon, where she pledged, “We will continue to seek the truth.”

Zimmerman who is in the custody of Florida law enforcement faces life imprisonment if convicted.

PREVIOUSLY:

An unarmed Trayvon Martin, 17, was shot and killed by Zimmerman on Feb, 26. He claimed self-defense.  Sanford cops did not charge Zimmerman, citing Florida’s “stand your ground” law.

The announcement of a charge against Zimmerman comes the day after his attorneys withdrew from representing him, saying they were unable to contact him.
