TIM LAMBESIS, a Grammy nomm’ed lead singer for heavy metal Christian band As I Lay Dying accused of trying to hire a hit man to kill his estranged wife.  Too bad the paid killer was an undercover cop!

Lambesis, 32, was arrested on suspicion of solicitation of another to commit murder.

San Diego cops say detectives received information last week that Lambesis had allegedly asked someone to kill his wife.

A law enforcement task force from multiple agencies quickly launched an investigation prompting the arrest.

Spokeswoman for the SD County Sheriff’s Department Jan Caldwell told media the arrest was made because someone revealed the solicitation to police, unwilling to let something as "sinister" as the alleged plot unfold.

Authorities sent in an undercover op to bag the alleged perp.

“I heard one of our captains say we prevented a tragedy,” Caldwell told San Diego’s Fox 5.

The accused’s band As I Lay Dying formed in San Diego in 2000, releasing six LPs including "An Ocean Between Us," which topped Number 8 on Billboard's charts in 2007.

POP FYI: the band copped its name from a novel of the same name by literary lion William Faulkner.
