Angelina Jolie is facing a new life-threatening cancer drama!
In a blockbuster ENQUIRER exclusive, sources reveal the rail-thin “Maleficent” star’s weight has plummeted to a skeletal 90 pounds as she prepares to undergo a risky second cancer surgery.
The 38-year-old actress, who had a preventive double mastectomy last year, plans to have her ovaries removed, and her devoted fiancé Brad Pitt is panicked that her fragile physical condition could cause the procedure to end in tragedy. “Brad is fearful that Angie may not be strong enough to survive the operation,” a source told The ENQUIRER “He’s worried sick about her!”
An insider close to the superstar couple added: “Brad’s biggest concern is that, in her emaciated state, deadly complications could develop. Or Angie’s heart could simply give out on the operating table. And she hasn’t even told Brad and the kids about all the risks associated with the surgery.”
Medical experts agree that the near-skeletal mom of six could die during surgery and tell The ENQUIRER that Brad, 50, has every right to be anxious. “There is always a risk of complications, even death, in a healthy individual undergoing surgery,” Dr. Arthur Wisot, clinical professor in the department of obstetrics and gynecology at UCLA, who has not treated Angelina, told The ENQUIRER. “It appears Angelina has a BMI (body mass index) well below normal, which would increase her risk from the anesthetic. The possible complications include cardiac arrhythmia and electrolyte imbalance. That’s the combination of factors that killed singer Karen Carpenter. “If Angelina were my patient, i would want her to have a normal BMI before surgery because I would want her to be in optimal health.”
While having her ovaries removed would reduce Angelina’s risk of cancer by 80 percent, the “Tomb Raider” star would still be at risk for infection, intestinal blockage and damage to internal organs, added Dr. Gabe Mirkin, author of “The Healthy Heart Miracle.” “Losing the hormones produced by the ovaries would increase her risk for infertility, osteoporosis and premature menopause, which may include sexual problems, sleep disturbances and even cognitive problems,” Dr. Mirkin, who has not treated the “Salt” beauty, told The ENQUIRER. “Angelina will also increase her risk of heart disease, which is the number one killer of women. If she’s deficient in vital nutrients, her weight will also be an issue.”
Angelina made the gutsy decision to battle cancer head-on after tests showed she carries a faulty BRCa1 gene, meaning her chances of contracting both breast and ovarian cancer are very high. Her mother, actress Marcheline Bertrand, had been diagnosed with breast cancer and eventually died from ovarian cancer at age 56 in 2007.
In an emotional article published in “The New York Times” in May 2013, Angelina revealed she’d undergone a preventive double mastectomy three months earlier. “There’s still another surgery to have, which I haven’t yet,” the Oscar-winning star said recently. “I’ll get advice from all these wonderful people who I’ve been talking to, to get through that next stage.”
Angie is expected to undergo a hysterectomy with an oophorectomy, where the ovaries are removed, to combat her raised odds of developing ovarian cancer, which now stand at 50 percent. Maintaining a healthy weight – which is between 130 and 140 pounds for an average woman of Angelina’s 5-foot- 7 height – is crucial with such constantly major surgery in her future, and Brad has tried everything to persuade her to eat more.
“Brad’s been telling Angie that she needs to put some meat on those bones,” said the source. “But there’s no talking to Angie when it comes to food. He’s tearing his hair out watching her fade away with each passing day. “Now her bony arms and claw-like fingers make her look almost as frightening as the evil character she plays in her new movie ‘Maleficent’!”
Even Angelina has admitted she’s too thin, but the “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” sexpot insists her active lifestyle and hectic schedule keep her from being able to gain weight. “I am too thin,” she said. “I don’t like that I’m that thin. If I could snap my fingers tomorrow and put on 15 pounds, I’d be so happy if it went in the right places.”
Instead, sources say Angelina, who withered to a spindly 93 pounds while directing the film “Unbroken” in Australia, has continued to lose weight and now tips the scales at just 90 pounds. Despite that, the actress continues a breakneck schedule, promoting “Maleficent,” globetrotting for her charity work as a United Nations ambassador and doing post-production work on “Unbroken.”
Angelina also tends to her brood, including adopted children Maddox, 12, Pax, 10, and Zahara, 9, plus her biological children with Brad, daughter Shiloh, 8, and 5-year-old twins Knox and Vivienne. “Yeah, they can certainly fill up your day,” she said. “But I wouldn’t have it any other way.” But even whirlwind Angie admits she took on too much last year. “Brad and I take turns working and we back each other up, so we make sure our children never go without,” she said. “When I’m working, he’s picking them up and dropping them off at school. We got stuck on the last movies – I was directing ‘Unbroken’ and he was making (World War II film) ‘Fury,’ and they overlapped. That’s the first time that has ever happened, which was not fun.” She’s revealed that she plans to do another film with Brad along with a sequel to her action thriller, “Salt.”
And when asked if she’d consider running for political office, she replied: “If I thought I’d be effective, I would,” she told “Good Morning America” co-anchor George Stephanopoulos.
Meanwhile, “World War Z” hunk Brad remains apprehensive about the major surgery that Angelina faces. “Brad thinks Angie’s a wonderful mother and a great artist and humanitarian,” said the source. “But he’s constantly worried that she’s bitten off more than she can chew and she’s driving herself to an early grave.
“His greatest fear is that this next operation could be the end of her!”
