DATELINE: CARACAS -- discovery of digital camera stolen from slain Miss Venezuela Monica Spear and her ex-hubby lead to ID-ing seven alleged perps who, cops say, were involved in the slaying.
The double homicide occurred in front of Spears, 29, and her ex-husband Thomas Henry Berry, 39, five-year-old daughter.
Spear, Miss Venezuela 2004, and Thomas Henry Berry were returning to Caracas on vacation with their daughter when a sharp object in the road punctured two of their car’s tires.
A pair of tow trucks arrived to help almost immediately after the breakdown, and the suspects attacked once the car was lifted onto one of the trucks.
They locked the car doors to no avail.
The chief of Venezula police Commissioner Jose Gregorio Sierralta said the criminal band was led by a 32-year-old known as “Fat Danilo,” who has been arrested.
He said at least 11 people took part in the murders and four remained fugitives.
Comm. Sierralta told reporters that the camera was found during a search of the home of one of the people arrested for the killing of the pair on an isolated stretch of highway night during a robbery attempt.
Five people originally arrested as suspects in the crime had been released.
