Despite trying to put a lid on the mounting IRS scandal, the Associated Press information seizure AND Benghazi, President Obama said NO to a special prosecutor.
Obama dismissed the idea of a special prosecutor to investigate the Internal Revenue Service Thursday, saying probes by Congress and the Justice Department should be able to dope out who did who to whom by for improperly targeting tea party groups applied for tax-exempt status.
"Between those investigations I think we're going to be able to figure out exactly what happened, who was involved, what went wrong, and we're going to be able to implement steps to fix it," Obama said at a special presser today regarding the IRS fiasco.
"I promise you this, that the minute I found out about it, then my main focus was making sure that we get the thing fixed," Obama told media.
"I'm outraged by this in part because look, I'm a public figure, if a future administration is starting to use the tax laws to favor one party over another or one political view over another, obviously, we're all vulnerable."
Obama forced out IRS Commissioner Steven Miller out of office yesterday.
Meanwhile, Attorney General Eric Holder said three separate congressional committees are investigating the case, and the FBI is looking into alleged civil rights violations at the IRS.
Meanwhile, civil rights and freedom of the press are also in question by the seizure of Associated Press reporters’ phone records as the Benghazi hearings continues.
Update: Obama has named longtime civil servant Daniel Werfel as the acting IRS commissioner.
