Canadian police and intelligence ops announce multiple arrests thwarting a “major terrorist attack”.
The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation reported citing unidentified "highly placed" sources that the Royal Canadian Mounted Police said in a statement that they would provide details about a "national security criminal investigation" at a presser
The statement said security forces had conducted joint operations in Toronto and in Montreal, two of Canada’s major cities.
Accoring to reports, U.S. officials said the alleged plot was not linked with the Boston Marathon bombings.
The CBC said the ops were conducted with the both U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the FBI.
The arrests follow Boston bombings but recent revelations that Canadians took part in an attack by militants on a gas plant in Algeria in January.
UPDATED: The RCMP arrested two men on Monday who had been planning to bomb a passenger train, The NY Times reported. One was arrested in Toronto and one near Montreal following an extensive investigation that dated back to last August and included the F.B.I.
The two men, identified as Chiheb Esseghaier and Raed Jaser, were working with Al Qaeda, according to the RCMP.
Chief Superintendent Jennifer Strachan said that the two men watched trains in and around Toronto and were plotting to attack a train operated by Via Rail Canada, the government-owned rail system, in Canada.
The police emphasized that the public was never in “imminent danger.”
Canadian law enfocement told media the two suspects had been under constant observation and that contingency plans had been made.
The police also executed search warrants at several locations in Toronto and Montreal.
