After receiving tragic diagnosis, beloved “Wichita Lineman” GLEN CAMPBELL vows to fight until the very end, The ENQUIRER reports.
Music legend GLEN CAMPBELL is bravely battling Alzheimer’s disease but THAT ain’t stopping the beloved star, The ENQUIRER has learned.
As the Grammy winner, 75, struggles to complete his Goodbye Tour, he has been getting disoriented on stage and forgetting the lyrics to some of his most famous songs, say sources.
And that unusual behavior led his wife, Kim, to suspect something was seriously wrong, said a source close to the singer.
“Initially, Glen kept discounting it, blaming it on old age. But Kim wasn’t buying it,” noted the source. “She sent him to the doctor, and specialists confirmed that he was in the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease.
“Glen sobbed when he got the news, and Kim just held him.”
Alzheimer’s disease is a type of dementia that causes problems with memory, thinking and behavior. It gradually worsens over time.
But even though Glen has somecognitive difficulties, he refuses to slow down, said another insider.
The Country Music Hall of Famer, who’s sold more than 45 million albums and had a slew of Top 10 hits – including “Gentle on My Mind” - he continues to tour and record. Glen streets “Ghost on the Canvas” – which is touted as his “last album ever” – in late August.
The star, who splits his time between Phoenix and Malibu, Calif., is also scheduled to begin the British leg of The Goodbye Tour in late October. But recent performances have been worrisome.
On June 4, Glen visibly struggled during a sold-out show in Indianapolis. “Campbell came across as unprepared at best and disoriented at worst,” wrote a reviewer for the local paper. Another concertgoer called it “the worst and most heartbreaking performance I’ve ever seen.
“At first everyone thought Glen must be drunk, but it became apparent that something was physically wrong with him. I’m a huge Glen Campbell fan, but watching him struggle like that onstage was painful.”
Glen, married four times and a father of eight, has led a colorful life. He made headlines for romancing a 21-year-old Tanya Tucker in 1980, has battled substance abuse problems, and was arrested on drunk-driving and hit-and-run charges in 2003. He has been married to Kim, a former Radio City Music Hall dancer, since 1982.
Now The True Grit star bravely soldiers on after more 50 years in showbiz with his farewell tour and the LP release, said the source.
“He may be losing some of his abilities because of the Alzheimer’s, but he refuses to go down without a fight.”
