After 10 years of marriage, Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman are calling it quits. According to a spokesperson for the couple, Pat Kingsley, the actors' decision to separate was made with much regret.
"Citing the difficulties inherent in divergent careers, which constantly keep them apart, they concluded that an amicable separation seems best for both of them at this time," Kingsley said.
It's not known whether Cruise and Kidman will share custody of their adopted children, 8-year-old Isabella and 6-year-old Connor. Kingsley said that no other comment would be made.
Cruise and Kidman met on the set of the film Days of Thunder, and were married a few months after its release, on Christmas Eve 1990.
Both saw their careers skyrocket over the next decade, with Cruise taking the leading role in such box-office hits as Jerry Maguire, A Few Good Men and Mission: Impossible, and Kidman starring in Malice, To Die For and Practical Magic.
On occasion, their careers crossed paths. They appeared on screen together twice after Days of Thunder, in the 1992 romantic Irish tale Far and Away and in Stanley Kubrick's controversial film Eyes Wide Shut in 1999.
To most outsiders, Cruise and Kidman's marriage seemed to be one of the few in Hollywood that would endure.
In a 1998 interview, Kidman said: "It has been nine years and I'm passed the seven-year itch. When you're loved for your flaws, that's when you really feel safe."
Kidman has not been married before. Cruise was previously married to actress Mimi Rogers for three years. Their divorce became final two months before he and Kidman wed.
