HBO comedy star "Ali G" dumbfounds celebrities with outrageously ridiculous questions, but he was dead serious when he asked "Scooby-Doo" actress Isla Fisher to be his wife.
The British-born star of "Da Ali G Show" -- whose real name is Sacha Baron Cohen -- is set to wed Isla, 28, in her hometown of Perth, Australia, later this year.
HOME IN THE HILLS
The star couple have been renting Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt's old home in the Hollywood Hills for the past several months while Sacha works on his series and his first American feature film.
"Isla is converting to Judaism for her fiance so they can have a traditional Jewish wedding," said a source close to 32-year-old Sacha.
"The couple have even made several journeys to Israel, and last year they had to cut one of their trips short when a bullet was fired into their hotel room in Tel Aviv. At first they thought their room had been targeted. Then police discovered two bodies in the adjoining hotel room!"
Sacha plays three wacky principal characters on his show -- moronic rapper wanna-be/interviewer Ali G, crass Middle Eastern immigrant Borat and fey Austrian fashion expert Bruno.
But in real life he's a soft-spoken Cambridge University graduate who was considering getting his Ph.D. in history before he went into comedy.
"Although he's enjoying the success of Ali G, he gets more and more anxious as his popularity grows," said the source.
A MATCH MADE IN ENGLAND
"He's uneasy with fame, and Isla, who rose to fame as an Australian soap opera actress, is trying her best to help him get used to public adoration.
"Sacha and Isla first met while she was working on a musical theater production in England.
"He popped the question, but they've been so busy -- him with a new series and movie projects and her with the recent films 'I Heart Huckabee's' and 'The Wedding Crashers' -- that they haven't had time for the wedding plans . . . until now." -- CRAIG STEPHENS and RICK EGUSQUIZA
