A family spokesperson for Britney Spears' parents says they feel Dr. Phil McGraw violated their trust by making public statements regarding his private visit hospital with the pop star. "This is another example of a trust being betrayed," Lou Taylor, the family's spokesperson told Meredith Vieira on Wednesday's Today show.
The pop star arrived at Cedars-Sinai hospital early Friday morning, strapped to a gurney after her standoff with police last week during a custody dispute. Britney's parents, Jamie and Lynne, have had a relationship with McGraw's family, and asked if the talk show host could visit Spears in the hospital as a private favor.
The Spears family spokesperson says, "The family basically extended an invitation of trust as a resource to support them, not to make a public statement. Any public statements he made, because he was brought in under this cloak of trust, are just inappropriate."
In addition, Dr. Phil wanted to devote one of his talk show episodes to the Spears family, who refused to take part in it. "He was not invited to make this a public display or part of the media," Taylor said. "It would be detrimental for anybody to ever do that."
McGraw has no regrets though, he tells Entertainment Tonight. "Somebody needs to step up and provide a vector to get this young woman into some quality care... I do not apologize one whit, not one second."
According to Taylor, this "self-serving" act of a talk show host has strained the relationship between Britney and her parents: "I think it's been compromised, because it's a measure of trust."
Meanwhile, Britney has been ordered to stay away from her ex, Kevin Federline. According to a report, LAPD officers issued an emergency protective order which requires Brit to stay clear of K-Fed for five business days. Authorities reportedly hope the restraining order would stabilize the situation. The next custody hearing is scheduled for Jan. 14.
