Iconic sportscaster Jim McKay is dead at 86.
The Emmy winner was the host of ABC's influential and top-rated Wide World of Sports for more than 40 years beginning in 1961.
McKay did the opening narration, carving a niche in pop culture history with his phrasing of "the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat."
McKay also covered 12 Olympics for the Alphabet Net and was on the scene with heart rending reportage broadcast live around the world during the Summer Olympics in Munich, 1972.
Palestinian terrorists kidnapped 11 Israeli athletes and when a commando raid to free them failed, it was McKay who told a waiting world, "They're all gone."
"In the long run, that's the most memorable single moment of my career," McKay said.
