LATEST UPDATE 830 PM EDT: Despite new info in the disappearance of DREW PETERSON’s 4th wife STACY, Illinois police fail to find her remains after an all day dig near Peoria.
The excavation party, including a forensic anthropologist, will resume work Monday and expand to other areas of the farm near Kickapoo Creek, Illinois State Police Master Sgt. Tom Burek revealed.
"We've been down different paths before and there's been disappointments before," Burek said.
"I don't want to stand here and tell you this is the magical lead that's going to solve the case. ... Like any lead we hope that it has a positive outcome."
Illinois State Police confirmed they are currently following a hot lead in regarding Peterson’s disappearance.
State Police Master Sgt. Tom Burek confirmed law enforcement agencies were searching rural land "thick with timber" for signs of Stacy Peterson.
"Obviously, because of the rain, it's very muddy right now. It's a muddy mess out there," Burek said.
They have set up a staging area at a location on U.S. Route 150, near Orange Prairie Road outside Peoria and will address media later, State Police said.
Peoria County Coroner Johanna Ingersoll also confirmed the hunt, "There is a search underway for human remains.
The Chicago Sun-Times reports Stacy Peterson’s relatives are at the scene
Law enforcement using specially trained dogs, searched a hunting area near Peoria Friday. They are now set to dig in specified area where they suspect the remains to be.
Stacy Peterson vanished Oct. 26, 2007 and Drew, a former Bolingbroke, Ill. police officer, has long been considered a “person of interest” in the case.
Peterson is scheduled to stand trial next month, in the 2004 drowning death of third wife, Kathleen Savio.
As The ENQUIRER reported previously Savio’s death was initially ruled an accident, but investigators opened the cold case after Stacy Peterson disappeared.
A second autopsy confirmed homicide, and Drew Peterson was charged with murder.
It was earlier reported that the new police lead came from a fellow prison inmate of Peterson’s and search dogs led police to the site in question.
Peterson's defense attorney Joel A. Brodsky, issued a statement, regarding the search: "The current report about Stacy Peterson is just another in a long line of baseless allegations against Drew Peterson.
"Ever since Stacy disappeared there have been numerous rumors, gossip and reports about Drew Peterson. The one thing all of these stories have in common is that they always prove to be false and there are never any facts or evidence to back them up.
"There has never been one single factual piece of evidence regarding either Stacy's disappearance, or in the death of Kathy Savio, that shows that Drew is guilty of any wrongdoing whatsoever."
