The new film
"Star Trek Beyond" provides a new take on the character of Lieutenant Sulu — with the character now openly homosexual! The film's writers intended to pay tribute to
George Takei, who originated the role in the 1960s TV show. The actor has since become a prominent gay activist after coming out of the closet in 2005. But in a shocking twist to the proud "Beyond" cast, George isn't happy with Sulu's plot twist!

George (seen here with his husband Brad) added: "I said, 'This movie is going to be coming out on the 50th anniversary of "Star Trek," the 50th anniversary of paying tribute to Gene Roddenberry, the man whose vision it was carried us through half a century. Honor him and create a new character.'"

Instead, George's preference was ignored — and the new "Star Trek Beyond" features Sulu being seen with his husband. The good news is that Sulu is still shown to have a child, but it's not like the original kid. As Takei explains, the novel "Star Trek: The Captain's Daughter" reveals Sulu's daughter was born after "to put it crudely, a one-night stand with a Glamazon!"
