Son Of Sam Arrested
David Berkowitz — who terrified New York City as the infamous "Son of Sam" — is up for parole and telling authorities: "I do a lot of good things!" The aging psycho, now 63, is serving six consecutive 25-years-to-life sentences for the murders of six people (and wounding seven more) during his bizarre killing spree between 1976 and 1977. There was a time when Berkowitz was an unlikely candidate for freedom. That's all changed, however, since killer
Leslie Van Houten was recently granted parole for her part in the equally infamous

In transcripts taken from his parole board appearance, Berkowitz explained that he's spent decades in prison becoming a better person: "I was constantly putting myself out there to help other individuals, with kindness and compassion."

"I mean," Berkowitz added, "I feel that's my life's calling, all these years. My evaluations, and so forth, should show that to be true. I've done a lot of good and positive things, and I thank God for that." But

Berkowitz chose his "Son of Sam" nickname while leaving behind letters boasting of his work and saying that he "loves to hunt." He also wrote to Daily News columnist Jimmy Breslin. Berkowitz's reign of terror became even more chilling after his arrest, as the psycho claimed that he was following orders from a demon speaking through the dog owned by a neighbor.

The ENQUIRER later uncovered a chilling jailhouse letter where Berkowitz also confirmed that he had partners in his killing spree — but would take their names to the grave!

The would-be parolee wrote about his accomplices in a 2002 letter to Pamela Hookham, who helped expose the killer's secrets after she wrote to him in prison. "You have asked me why I have not revealed the others who were involved in my murderous activities," wrote Berkowitz, "and the best way I can address this is to say that 2 persons have already passed, and the other 2 persons are not a threat to society, and although they still live within the area, they have gone on to productive lives."

Berkowitz — now an outspoken Christian leading Bible Studies in prison — added: "I do not see the need to bring this up, and in my heart, knowing that when they pass they will stand before God and answer for what was in their hearts." Berkowitz also admitted that he will always have his homicidal urges!

"You were correct in your statement that one does not just wake up and decide to be a murderer," Berkowitz wrote to Leslie. "To tell you the truth, I can't remember the details of the first time I killed. I do recall I was only a child of 11 years old. Satan possessed me at a verv young age...You also asked me if I had the urge to kill again. Although I have dealt with emotional problems that made me listen to those who wanted me to kill, I believe till I pass from this life I will have those feelings."
